Warren Marx
Warren Marx is the alias used by the somewhat misanthropic artist Mark Fancher when he straps on a guitar and takes the stage, be it a benefit concert, a backyard or living room performance, even dock parties… for the right people; beginning with the Amchitka protests in the early 70’s. He went on to perform solo or occasionally in a band with a Handful of Musical Eccentrics (HOME). He did his time playing the bars, doing cover songs interspersed with witty originals. A growing family and no real prospects to move to the next level musically, meant a change to a stay close to home occupation was indicated.
Reinventing himself as a graphic designer, his eventual career as a creative director allowed him to travel the world while developing campaigns that as he says “essentially told people where to go and how to get there”. Nonetheless music was never far away and weekly gatherings with other musician home bodies eventually became disciplined writing sessions, crafting songs with other songwriters, including several songs with Lost Durangos Greg Potter and The Arm Band’s Kevin Hammond.
Growing friendships with long established songwriters and recording artists Jim Foster, Bruce Miller and the always entertaining Norman Foote eventually brought Warren Marx out of hiding and back onto the stage, as an occasional opening act for Jim Foster, as well as a few shows with the aforementioned Arm Band.
Although he knew of Mark as an incredibly hard of hearing and somewhat temperamental “Ad Man/Videographer”, these shows introduced Quest Records Paul Hovan to a side of which he’d been unaware of, the musician Warren Marx. Knowing Mark’s history of non-stop tinnitus that developed after a car accident nearly took his life, he deemed it important to capture Warren's song writing and playing as a legacy for family, friends and posterity, before he became totally deaf and reluctantly, Warren agreed.
Which more or less brings us up to date and the “Happy Little Monkeys” recordings.
