The Quest Publishing Story
REPRESENTING CREATIVE CONTENT WRITERS AND PRODUCERS FOR FILM, TELEVISION, STAGE, PUBLICATION, MUSIC AND ONLINE MEDIA SINCE 2008
Terminal City
Quest got its start by publishing Terminal City in 1992 as a "weekly", newspaper with initial circulation in Vancouver, Bellingham, and occasionally Whistler and Seattle. The 'TC' had a significant cultural impact on the city during its on and off-again and on-again history. In October 2005, Terminal City ceased print publication but continues online.*
The Tyee
Representing an anonymous philanthropist, Quest Publishing began developing the concept for The Tyee website; an independent online Canadian news magazine that primarily covers British Columbia. It was founded in November 2003 by its editor-in-chief, David Beers, an award-winning writer and former features editor at The Vancouver Sun.
The name "Tyee" is based on a local definition of Tyee salmon — a Chinook or Spring salmon of thirty pounds or more. Derived from the Nuu-chah-nulth language, the word means a chief, a king, or champion. The word also embodied the magazine's dedication to publishing lively, informative news and views, to "roam free, and go where we wish" as Tyee salmon do
Tyee articles focus on politics, culture and life. It has expanded its activities to a blog: The Hook. Within two years of its launch, over 1,000 articles had been published, reaching 89,458 unique visitors. In 2009, according to BCBusiness magazine, The Tyee had a growing British Columbia readership, up 77 percent since 2007 to approximately 175,000 unique visitors a month. By 2017, The Tyee was regularly receiving between 800,000 to 1,000,000 page views a month.*
Quest Records
Paul Hovan had been looking to get back into the music business for several years when he realized there were no opportunities for artists that were important to the cultural fabric of the city to record a legacy album. To fill this gap, and with the help of two uniquely talented associates, Quest Records was formed as a ‘philanthropic legacy label’, wherein the artists could retain all of their publishing rights.
Since its inception, Quest Records has produced and released more than a dozen CD albums and digital singles to international media, their recording artists have won awards for their recordings and there are plans for even more releases from Quest recording artists in the future.
